Sablier

Twenty-three blown orbs, hung at lengths taken from a tide table.

The drop lengths of Sablier are not designed. They are transcribed from a week of tide heights at Saint-Malo in March 1961, the week Étienne’s daughter Mireille was born, scaled to a 1.6 m field.

Each orb is free-blown without a mould, so the walls vary from 1.8 to 3.4 mm. Thin walls hold more light and read almost white; thick walls hold shadow at the pole. Hung together the field has a visible weather to it.

Sablier is the only piece we will install at an angle. Roughly a third of clients ask for the field to be tipped five or six degrees against the ceiling plane, and it is better for it.
